Creating a healthy shake with Beanies

September 15, 2015

Last week I succumbed to a McDonalds caramel frappe. At the time it was cool creamy and delicious but later that evening I started to question why it was quite so tasty… turns out it was jam packed full of everything I’ve been trying to avoid, 440 calories and 18 grams of fat in just one drink!

Shocked to say the least I was inspired by Beanies coffee to create my own healthy version…..

Beanies coffee

Using my handy breville blender I whizzed up a handful of ice, 200mls of skimmed milk, a small banana and a teaspoon of Beanies coffee.

As well as making the shake thicker, the banana also adds some sweetness with the added benefit of being one of your five-a-day. Echoing the frappe flavours I decided to use the Cinder Toffee flavour Beanies Coffee, but they have so many varieties you could create almost any combination you fancied.

So how does my shake compare? The small banana has 90 calories and 0.3 grams of fat, the skimmed milk 70 calories and 0.2 grams of fat. The ice cubes contribute to hydration but not the calorie count, and my beanies coffee boasts less than 2 calories per serving.

Totalling up the above my shake comes to a grand total of 162 calories, with just half a gram of fat. Super speedy to prepare I’ve found my creation to be a satisfying breakfast to enjoy on the go, replacing a meal rather than being an addition to it.

I love the way the Beanies flavours make coffee that little bit interesting, and while my shake isn’t quite as creamy I’m happy to make that sacrifice for the sake of my waistband.

Inspired by my recent success I’ve been browsing Pinterest for healthy shake recipes, there are so many combinations to try….have a look through, and you’ll have your breakfasts planned for the next week!
