It’s no secret that our baby boy suffered from Colic, and we’ve covered how it affected our days together in a diary here. A big challenge for us, a year on from when it started (Around five weeks) I thought I’d reflect on the impact it had on us as a family.
Echoed in a research project named ‘Stress in the First Six Months’ from Infacol, their findings have shown that infant colic affects in 1 in 5 babies, but 1 in 3 Mums admit that they don’t know what it is.
In the early days of Harry’s colic, I felt at a complete loss. With the symptoms often different from one baby to another, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what is wrong.
For us, Harry’s colic problems were primarily during the day, with very few issues through the night. It tended to start around two hours after a feed (sometimes sooner) and he would cry until he was exhausted. Even then a colic bout would wake him up every few minutes, making it impossible for him to nap properly through the day.
It took well over a month to develop a routine that minimised the problems colic caused Harry, and routinely giving him Infacol, Gripe Water and Colief with every feed seemed to be the magic combination for us.
Around six months we weaned him off our trusty trio, and we were very relieved to find his colic bouts were a thing of the past.
This month I’m working alongside Infacol, and support group Cry-sis, to help raise awareness of Infant Colic, in the hope that parents can find all the help and support they need if their little one is affected.
Very kindly, Infacol have offered to give a lucky winning reader a lovely Kimbo Seersucker Sleeping Bag from The White Company (0.5 togs for 0-6 months, worth £28.00) Ideal if you have a little one of your own, or the perfect gift for parents-to-be, enter via the gleam widget below for a chance to win.
I found the tears that came along with colic heart-breaking, and according to Infacol’s research excessive crying in infants is a source of stress for 85% of parents. What did you find most stressful about being a new parent?
